Friday's Activities |
| Posted by Malcolm Egner (mjegner) on Nov 09 2007 at 2:45 PM |
The Team was split in groups for a variety of activities.
In Area 4 there was a club for 0-6s in the morning - 75 attended at the church; a craft club in the afternoon for 10-14s, with 29 attending at the Jigsaw Literacy Centre; in the evening the Solid Rock youth group met. Jigsaw worker, Beth, manages Area 4 activities - she is brilliant, planning well, interacting superbly with the children, and also has a strong concern for people's rights.
Area 4 is better organised than the other slum areas we have been in. The walkways tend to be concreted; rubbish is left in a designated area to be collected twice weekly; and when there moves to start a karaoke, with all the attendant prostitution, Beth co-ordinated opposition, and with much prayer the plans were thwarted. The most incongruous aspect of Area 4 is the estate you have to travel through to get there - it is gated with security guards, and consists of very large, posh housing - what a contrast!
At Visayas, Kate conducts a homework club for Jigsaw sponsored school students in the morning, and there is club for 10+ in the afternoon.
Other members of the team had the opportunity to visit the Batasan slums where Jigsaw clubs have been suspended pending finding a replacement building. Some also visited families in the Visayas Ave area.
At lunchtime the Jigsaw management team went out for lunch to Grill & Sizzle (or Grizzle and Sizzle as James Lee calls it) where the plates are served sizzling!
For those not at Solid Rock there was a visit to Tiendasitas - a handicraft market.
