Basketball v Drugs |

Jigsaw, concerned for the harder street kids who are experimenting with glue-sniffing, alcohol and drugs, have turned to basketball as a means of reaching them and giving them a purpose. Today 20 lads from the streets piled into the back of the Jigsaw van (normal load of 10 people) to be taken to an open air basketball court in Quezon Circle.
Tim organises ball drills and team games to develop skills, before splitting them into four teams for 10 minute games. After four matches, it was everyone on the pitch, including yours truly.
After treating the lads to an ice cream from a street vendor, they gathered round to listen to the story of Harry the wall-climber. It's all about trusting your whole life to something or someone that you can rely on, rather than drugs or other false hopes. Tim says that they were engaging with the story and the message. Helen prayed at the end.
Tim recognises that if they want to take the basketball further they will need someone with some coaching skills. Even without that they are being kept off the street, they really look forward to the basketball to the extent that they are less likely to use drugs etc ... and some of them are really good whether that's bare footed or in flip flops!
