Area 4 play club

Today we only had one vehicle as the other two were having a rest day.  This is compulsory in Manila to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads.  This meant that Peter, Diane, Roland and I had to take two jeepneys and a motor tricycle to get to Area 4.

Area 4 is located at the far side of an extremely high class residential area and the only access is via the estate.

My first impression was a sense of spaciousness compared with Batusan.  The pathways were wider and the area much cleaner.

We arrived at the 7-11 play club to find about 45 children busily playing.  I was impressed by the variety of activities on offer from making jigsaw puzzles to skipping to table football.  This play club is available for all children who either cannot afford to go to school or whose classes were in the afternoon.  It must be popular because a large number of younger children had congregated outside the building to watch the older children playing.

Mums were busy looking after babies or washing.  There is always loads of washing on hangers outside the houses and much time is spent carrying water.

We spent a happy hour and a half with the three Jigsaw workers who regularly work at the centre.

Our trip back was interesting as there were four of us plus a young school boy on a motor tricycle.  The road back up through the estate was rather steep and at one point I thought we would all have to get off the bike and walk up the hill.  We ended up taking a zigzag course and finally managed to reach the top.

Traffic in Manila is a nightmare and it was very busy on our way back to the centre.  It was a good job that Roland was with us so that we were able to get on the right jeepneys to return to Visayas.
